Hygiene When Makeup Shopping
August 13, 2017
I am a freelance makeup artist but I also work a couple of days a week at a Mac store. At a Mac store or counter hygiene is everything, you will notice little glass beakers with a clear sanitsing solution dotted around everywhere, along with disposable mascara and lip wands. What never ceases to amaze me are the ladies and gentlemen that will happily glide an unsanitised lipstick along their lips and thicken their lashes with a mascara not questioning whether someone else had used it before them. It seems that once one enters a makeup shop all sense goes out of the window and when we (makeup assistants) step in to help, to offer to sanitise that lipstick, or offer disposable mascara and lipgloss wands we can sometimes be met with resistance or annoyance. Folks I am trying to lessen your chances of getting an infection don’t you care about your health!
It also isn’t just cosmetics but display brushes too. I cannot tell you the amount if times I have seen customers pick up a clearly used eyeshadow, foundation or powder brush wonder around stores applying or refreshing their makeup with a brush from a stand that clearly already has something on it. Using your own makeup filled brush is one thing (however, you do also need to clean your own brushes as bacteria breeds and can cause eye and skin problems), you know where that has been but to use a brush that has been used by god knows who else is quite another story. Would you go to a restaurant and eat from a used spoon with food still on it??? Guys we are here for you and although more often than not we can be busy, would it not be better to wait a few minutes and have your makeup applied by someone that has clean tools? #loveyourskin
